The Hellenic Bank Association (HBA) has announced support measures for households and businesses in Crete affected by recent extreme weather, including temporary suspensions of loan payments and debt collection procedures.
The association said its member banks are ready to assist households and businesses in the island’s affected regional units and provide relief to help residents and companies overcome the difficult circumstances caused by the severe weather.
Among the measures being prepared are arrangements to help affected borrowers meet their loan obligations. Borrowers are asked to contact their bank directly, which will assess each request based on the extent of the damage suffered and the borrower’s needs, as well as the relief and restructuring options available.
Loan payments suspended through 2026
All HBA member banks are immediately implementing individual protection measures for borrowers in the affected areas, taking into account the serious impact of the extreme weather on the local economy and society.
The measures include:
- Suspension of loan payments: Banks will suspend the obligation to make payments on performing loans held by individuals and businesses through December 31, 2026.
- Suspension of debt collection procedures: Banks will suspend all judicial and extrajudicial procedures for collecting claims from individuals and businesses through February 28, 2027.
The measures will apply to affected borrowers who fall within the scope of the government support measures for the affected areas, which are to be announced.
Eligible borrowers can submit their requests directly to their bank through any available communication channel, either in person or electronically.
