Greek authorities over the weekend announced the arrest of eight foreign nationals hidden inside a tractor trailer that had just crossed from Turkey into the country from the Kipi border post, with the noteworthy aspect in this case being the use of state-of-the-art equipment to locate the group.

Specifically, authorities said equipment detecting heartbeats and carbon dioxide indicated the presence of living mammals within the cargo, leading to an exhaustive search and the detection of the irregular migrants.

The driver of the lorry was arrested on migrant smuggling charges, while the group of foreign nationals were also detained.

The border crossings on the Greece-Turkey frontier (Evros prefecture) in the Thrace region daily witness heavy truck traffic, making it nearly impossible for customs officers to search every vehicle individually.
