An Italian man died after he collapsed during a hike in Chania, Crete. The man, 70, was walking along a rugged trail with a group near the small town of Palaiochora, located roughly 70 km south of the city of Chania.

According to reports, while hiking, the tourist felt intense discomfort before collapsing. His fellow travelers immediately contacted authorities via the 112 emergency system.

Before long, first responders who had arrived on the scene launched a search and rescue operation to free the man from the treacherous path.

After managing to pull him up, firefighters handed the man over to the medics present, who, despite their efforts, were unable to save him.

A coroner’s autopsy is expected to determine the exact cause of his death.
