A 50-year-old man has been remanded in custody in Greece after being accused of viciously assaulting his partner, leaving her critically injured and fighting for her life in hospital. The incident occurred in Koropi, a town near Athens, and has drawn national attention amid growing concern over domestic violence cases.
After a three-hour testimony, the man failed to convince the prosecutor and investigating judge of his version of events and was ordered to remain in pre-trial detention. He faces charges of attempted homicide and domestic violence against his 40-year-old partner — the mother of their two young sons.
Victim Awakens but Has Memory Loss
The woman has regained consciousness after days in intensive care, but doctors say her recovery will be slow. She is reportedly unable to recall the attack. According to hospital staff, one of her first concerns upon waking was for her children and her partner, telling them:
“Where are my children? I need to get well so I can go to the airport to pick up my husband. He’s coming back on Thursday.”
The Suspect’s Testimony
The suspect, who had returned from a work trip to Estonia, told police he found his partner injured when he arrived home and denied any involvement.
“When I came back from the airport, she wasn’t there to pick me up as planned,” he reportedly said. “I went home by public transport and found her like that. I only care that she gets better.”
However, police investigators were not convinced. They found the scene inconsistent with the man’s claims of a robbery, describing clear signs of a violent struggle inside the house.
Child Witness and Past Abuse
The couple’s elder son, who witnessed the assault, told officers: “Daddy hit mommy.” The child had minor injuries, and authorities are investigating whether he was struck or hurt while trying to defend his mother.
According to neighbors and acquaintances, the 50-year-old suspect had a history of violence, having been arrested in 2023 for domestic abuse. Those close to the victim said she had endured a long and difficult relationship marked by fear and control.
A Troubled Past
Friends of the victim describe a woman who had faced hardship from an early age. Born in Lithuania, she reportedly left home to escape an abusive and authoritarian father, a prominent psychiatrist known for his strict views on family discipline.
“She didn’t have a good childhood,” a former colleague said. “She left Austria just to get away from her father. He would lock her in her room. Her life was very difficult.”
The victim’s father is now in Greece caring for the couple’s two sons, who are temporarily under the protection of child services.
Next Steps
Once her health allows, the woman is expected to testify before authorities, a step that could provide crucial clarity about what happened inside the family home in Koropi.
