A new round of testimony is underway in the investigation into the death of popular singer Giorgos Mazonakis, with investigators focusing on what happened at the medical office where he underwent a controversial treatment shortly before his collapse.

The daughter of the two doctors who have been remanded in custody in connection with the case is expected to appear before the 32nd regular investigating magistrate Friday. Her testimony is considered important for establishing the circumstances at the medical office during the hours in question.

Questions over plasma exchange and sedation

The magistrate is expected to ask the doctors’ daughter whether she had also undergone plasma exchange, a medical procedure in which plasma is removed from the blood and replaced as part of a treatment process.

If she confirms that she underwent the procedure, investigators are expected to ask whether she was given sedation beforehand by her mother, the 56-year-old doctor who is among those accused in the case.

The testimony comes as the first toxicology results from Mazonakis show the presence of benzodiazepines in his system. The substances have sedative and anti-anxiety properties and are found in a number of medications, including drugs containing midazolam.

The preliminary results do not, so far, refer to propofol, a drug for which the accused doctor is reportedly said to have requested an antidote.

What the paramedics told investigators

Two paramedics from Greece’s National Emergency Aid Center, known as EKAB, and an anesthesiologist who had worked at the internal medicine clinic in Athens’ Kolonaki neighborhood until 2023 appeared before the investigating magistrate on Wednesday.

The anesthesiologist had worked with the 56-year-old accused doctor and provided details about their professional relationship, the plasma exchange procedure and whether patients were sedated during the treatment.

The testimony of the two paramedics is also part of the new round of statements being taken by investigators as they seek to establish what happened around the time of Mazonakis’ collapse.

Authorities are also conducting a detailed examination of the couple’s digital devices, the mobile phones of people involved in the case and the computer at the medical office.

According to Greece’s public broadcaster ERT, investigators have recovered at least 35 photographs from the office computer showing the patient during the medical procedure, along with readings recorded by the medical equipment.

According to the evidence being examined, the digital findings appear to confirm that Mazonakis had been given sedation before he collapsed.

Investigators are also examining files that the 56-year-old doctor is believed to have stored in a digital folder on the medical office’s computer. According to the same information, the files were deleted after the popular singer’s death, but investigators were able to recover part of the material during their digital examination.
