The Rio-Antirrio strait is known for its especially strong and dangerous currents. The four swimmers were dragged toward deeper water and were unable to make it back to shore.
The sea pulled the four swimmers further out, leaving them unable to turn back. They began shouting and calling for help. A ferry running the Rio-Antirrio route immediately headed toward them, lowered its bow ramp, and managed to pick up two of the swimmers.
The other two had drifted farther from shore. A rescue boat from the relevant authorities, which had already been alerted, was mobilized to locate and rescue them.
The operation ended successfully, with all four swimmers rescued and in good health.
