A 16-year-old scooter rider is now facing felony charges following a hit-and-run incident in Athens that left a teenage girl critically injured.
The suspect, who was brought before judicial authorities earlier, has been formally prosecuted for two serious offenses. According to prosecutors, the charges include dangerous driving causing severe bodily harm—aggravated by the fact that he was allegedly driving without a license—and leaving the scene of an accident that posed a risk to life.
Additional suspects charged
Three other individuals are also implicated in the case. The passenger on the scooter faces charges including abandoning the scene of an accident and causing bodily harm.
Meanwhile, two more suspects—a 20-year-old woman identified as the owner of the scooter and a 20-year-old man described as its manager—are charged with misdemeanors, including harboring a suspect, giving false testimony, and filing a false report to authorities.
Court proceedings underway
The 16-year-old is expected to request additional time to prepare his defense before appearing before a juvenile investigating magistrate. The other suspects have already been granted time to prepare their statements and are due to testify in the coming days.
Victim in critical condition in ICU
The teenage girl remains in intensive care in a hospital in Athens, suffering severe head injuries. Doctors have performed emergency surgery, including the removal of her spleen, and describe her condition as critical.
Medical staff say she is sedated and under close observation, with the coming days considered crucial for her recovery.
CCTV footage shows impact and escape
Security camera footage from the area shows the girl walking across the street before being struck by the scooter at speed. The impact threw her onto the road, after which the rider and passenger are seen leaving the scene without offering assistance.
Shortly afterwards, they reportedly abandoned the scooter in an apparent attempt to avoid detection.
Family speaks out
The girl’s father has spoken publicly about the severity of her injuries and the traumatic impact on the family, describing multiple surgeries and significant internal trauma.
He also expressed anger over the incident, saying that apologies would not change what has happened or the severity of his daughter’s condition.
