A 16-year-old motorcycle driver is facing serious criminal charges after hitting and abandoning a teenage girl in a hit-and-run incident in Athens, as the victim remains in critical condition in intensive care.

The 16-year-old girl, who was struck on Liosion Street, is being treated at KAT Hospital, where she is intubated in the intensive care unit with life-threatening injuries. Doctors are expected to begin gradually waking her in the coming days to assess how her body responds.

Critical injuries and medical update

According to medical reports, the teenager suffered severe head trauma, chest injuries, a fractured clavicle, and a ruptured spleen after being hit by the motorcycle and thrown onto the road. Her condition remains extremely serious, with the next phase of treatment considered crucial.

Driver denies responsibility

The accused driver, a minor, appeared before an investigating magistrate on Monday. According to reports, he showed no remorse and claimed the victim was at fault, alleging she “suddenly stepped into the road” and that he panicked.

Prosecutors have brought felony charges against him, including dangerous driving causing severe bodily harm, driving without a license, and leaving the scene of an accident that endangered life.

He is expected to request additional time before giving his formal testimony, which is scheduled for April 23.

Additional suspects charged

Authorities have also filed charges against three other individuals connected to the case. The motorcycle’s passenger faces felony charges for abandoning the accident scene, along with a misdemeanor charge related to causing bodily harm.

Two other individuals—a 20-year-old believed to be the vehicle’s owner and another person identified as the motorcycle’s operator—are facing misdemeanor charges, including harboring a suspect, giving false testimony, and filing a false report.
