Μake us preferred on Google A woman in Heraklion (Irakleio) Crete has reported being subjected to a public shaming campaign after her name, home address, photograph and insulting allegations were placed on the windshields of several cars across a central neighborhood.
The incident took place Tuesday in the Therissos district of Heraklion, where security-camera footage shows a man leaving envelopes containing leaflets on parked vehicles.
The leaflets reportedly identified the woman by name and address, included her photograph and contained derogatory and sexually insulting references to her. Television reports said the material accused the woman of prostitution.
She immediately contacted police and gave a statement, with authorities now are examining security-camera footage from buildings across the neighborhood.
Police are reportedly focusing on two men seen distributing the leaflets and are also examining whether another woman may have been involved in organizing the smear campaign.
The alleged perpetrators appear to have deliberately taken the campaign offline, using printed leaflets and parked cars to disseminate the woman’s personal information throughout a neighborhood.
In a separate and particularly disturbing case in Heraklion earlier this year, police uncovered the prolonged abuse of a 55-year-old woman after investigators examining a mobile phone found 11 videos documenting beatings, threats and other humiliating acts.
A 42-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the case, while authorities also investigated the role of the owner of the apartment where the abuse allegedly took place. The case included allegations of unlawful detention, violence, threats, insults and violations of personal-data legislation.
