The Republic of Cyprus’ foreign ministry has strongly condemned a visit by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to the Turkish-occupied areas of northern Cyprus, describing it as an illegal and provocative act.

In a statement posted on X, the ministry said Fidan’s presence in the occupied areas constituted another challenge to the Republic of Cyprus and added to what it described as Turkey’s continued violations of the island’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
“This act constitutes yet another provocation, adding to Turkey’s ongoing violations of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus.”

The visit comes against the backdrop of long-standing tensions over the Cyprus problem and Ankara’s continued support for a two-state solution, which Nicosia rejects as incompatible with United Nations resolutions calling for a bizonal, bicommunal federation.
Cyprus has remained divided since Turkey’s 1974 military invasion.
The self-declared “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”, a pseudo-state established in 1983, is recognized only by Turkey, while the Republic of Cyprus remains internationally recognized as the island’s sovereign state and a member of the European Union since 2004.
