Μake us preferred on Google United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called Wednesday for countries supplying weapons to Sudan’s warring parties to be held accountable when those weapons are used in attacks against civilians.
“What is happening in Sudan is absolutely horrible,” Guterres told reporters in New York ahead of the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations. He described the humanitarian situation as devastating and the suffering of the Sudanese people as intolerable.
Foreign Support Fuels Sudan’s Conflict
Sudan’s war began in April 2023 after a power struggle between the country’s military and the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group. The conflict has displaced more than 14 million people and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
Guterres said outside countries were helping sustain the fighting.
“It is true that the conflict is fueled by a number of countries from the outside,” he said, arguing that accountability should apply when foreign governments provide weapons to parties to a conflict and those weapons are then used extensively against civilians.
His comments came after a U.N. fact-finding mission said earlier this month that foreign weapons, military technology, fighters and logistical networks were helping prolong Sudan’s war.
The mission also said such support was increasing the ability of the rival forces to carry out drone attacks against civilian areas far from the main areas of fighting.
