An explosion occurred on Saturday in the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, as announced by the country’s authorities.

Mehrdad Hasanzadeh, a regional disaster management official, told Iranian state television that there were injuries from the explosion, without giving further details. He added that rescue teams were trying to reach the area, while other forces were trying to evacuate the area.

The Tasnim news agency reported, citing a spokesman for the emergency services, that at least 195 people were injured.

Hasanzadeh said the explosion came from containers at the city’s Rajaei port.

Videos circulating on social media show a huge plume of black smoke rising into the air.The port of Rajaei mainly handles containerized cargo and also has oil tanks and other petrochemical facilities.

The explosion occurred as Iran begins a third round of talks with the US on its nuclear program in Oman today.

This is a developing story.
