A forensic examination has revealed that a 39-year-old woman who was killed by her husband in Kalamata suffered a total of 45 stab wounds, shedding new light on the brutality of the attack and intensifying the investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
According to the forensic report, the victim sustained numerous defensive injuries to her hands, indicating that she desperately tried to protect herself during the assault. Two stab wounds to the chest were identified as fatal, while another was found on her back.
The examination also recorded multiple wounds to the neck and jaw, believed to have been caused by repeated, rapid and forceful stabbing.
Investigators said many of the injuries appear to have been inflicted while the woman was already lying on the floor. Her body was discovered in a fetal position, a detail that highlights the violence of her final moments.
Authorities Examine Hours Before the Killing
Authorities are focusing on the hours leading up to the murder, including reports from neighbors who said they heard the victim shouting for help before the attack.
Police found the woman dead in the couple’s bedroom beside the bed. A knife was reportedly found in her hand, a detail that has attracted particular attention because the 41-year-old suspect claims he acted in self-defense.
The suspect reportedly told police that he woke up to find his wife standing over the bed threatening him with a knife and that he reacted during a confrontation.
His lawyer said the suspect had visible bruises and injuries beneath his eyes and argued that there may have been a physical altercation before the killing. He also stated that he has not yet reviewed the full case file and is reserving judgment until all evidence has been examined. The lawyer said he intends to request a three-day extension before further legal proceedings.
Children in Adjacent Room
One of the most shocking aspects of the case is that the couple’s two children, aged six and ten, were reportedly in the next room during the attack.
According to reports, the children did not appear to notice what happened. During a search of the apartment, police discovered packages of anti-anxiety and sedative medication, which have been collected as part of the investigation.
Authorities have reportedly ordered toxicology tests for both children as investigators seek to determine whether any substances may explain why they remained asleep despite the violent incident.
Reports of Ongoing Tensions
Neighbors told investigators they frequently heard arguments, shouting and incidents that appeared to involve verbal and physical violence.
At around 2 a.m. on Monday, residents reported hearing the victim calling for help. When police arrived at the apartment, the suspect allegedly opened the door covered in blood.
Investigators believe the motive may be linked to the suspect’s intense jealousy and the victim’s reported intention to seek a divorce. Although those close to her said she had expressed a desire to end the marriage, no formal domestic violence complaint had been filed with police.
Witnesses told local media that just hours before her death, the 39-year-old spent part of Sunday afternoon with her two children at a playground and café. She was reportedly sitting alone with a coffee and using her phone while the children played nearby.
