The Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has activated a comprehensive state assistance program to provide immediate relief to residents affected by the recent wildfires.

Authorities have begun coordinating with municipalities to rapidly assess damage, while financial aid, housing assistance, and reconstruction support are being rolled out for eligible households and businesses.

Engineering Teams Begin Damage Assessments

Engineering inspection teams have been deployed to the hardest-hit areas to document damage and determine eligibility for compensation.

In the Municipality of Mandra-Eidyllia, in western Attica, six three-member engineering committees from the General Secretariat for Natural Disasters Recovery and State Support (GDAEFK) have begun inspections. Two additional teams have been dispatched to the Municipality of Thebes in Boeotia.

Beginning Monday, Aug. 3, specialized inspection teams will also operate in the municipalities of Argos-Mycenae, West Achaea, Aigialeia, and Dorida. On Tuesday, Aug. 4, three committees from the Heraklion and Chania regional restoration offices will begin inspections in the Municipality of Rethymno on the island of Crete.

Affected residents will receive an information leaflet detailing available compensation programs alongside their inspection report. Specialized personnel will also assist municipalities that sustained the most extensive damage.

Immediate Financial Assistance Available

Once affected areas are officially declared in a state of emergency and inspections are completed, residents may qualify for the following emergency financial assistance:

  • Emergency living assistance: €600 for each affected primary residence.
  • Household contents and minor repair grant: Up to €6,000 for primary residences. The maximum amount is reduced by 50% for secondary homes.

How to Apply

Applications for the initial financial assistance must be submitted to the applicant’s local municipality within 45 days of the wildfire.

Applicants must provide:

  • A copy of the official GDAEFK inspection report.
  • E1 and E9 tax forms from the most recent tax year.
  • A family status certificate.
  • Documentation confirming disability benefits from OPEKA, Greece’s social welfare agency, if a household member receives disability assistance.

Housing Support and Reconstruction Aid

Following the issuance of a joint ministerial decision formally defining the affected areas, additional assistance measures will become available.

These include temporary housing support ranging from €300 to €500 for residents whose primary homes were destroyed, covering rental costs or shared accommodation.

The government will also provide 100% state-funded housing assistance for the repair or reconstruction of damaged buildings belonging to both private individuals and businesses.
