Greece’s winter quiet hours take effect Thursday, October 1, bringing new restrictions on noise that will remain in place until Wednesday, March 31, 2027.
Under the winter schedule, quiet hours run from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and from 10 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. the following day.
During these periods, activities that generate noise and disturb residents’ peace are prohibited.
What Is Prohibited During Quiet Hours?
Restrictions include noisy work, loud music, shouting and any other activity that could disturb people living nearby.
The rules apply inside homes as well as on streets, in squares and in other public spaces. Particular care is required during loading and unloading operations. The use of sirens and other sound systems is also restricted when there is no emergency.
Businesses and commercial establishments, as well as residents going about their daily activities, are required to keep noise to a minimum.
Pet owners must also ensure that their animals do not cause persistent or excessive noise that disturbs the peace.
Penalties for Violations
Violating Greece’s quiet-hours regulations can result in criminal penalties. Depending on the circumstances, offenders may face up to five months in prison or a fine.
