Greece’s four systemic banks have announced support measures for the families of wildfire victims, as well as for individuals and businesses affected by recent fires, the Hellenic Bank Association (HBA) said.

The initiatives, announced as part of the banks’ corporate social responsibility actions, involve Alpha Bank, Eurobank, National Bank of Greece and Piraeus Bank.

Debt relief and compensation for victims’ families

The four banks will cancel individual loan obligations — including mortgages, consumer loans and credit card debts — held with the banks by the parents, dependent children and spouses of Greek firefighters and helicopter crew members who died while performing their public duties.

The measure applies to the victims who lost their lives in incidents in Gytheio, Rethymno and Psatha.

In addition, the banks will immediately provide €50,000 to each of the five victims’ families affected by the wildfires in Rethymno and Gytheio and the helicopter accident in Psatha.

The banks have appointed the Hellenic Bank Association as their representative to implement the two measures. Families of the victims are invited to contact the association’s acting General Director, Charoula Apalagaki, through the email addresses provided by the HBA.

Six-month loan payment suspension for affected areas

The Hellenic Bank Association also announced that all member banks will suspend loan payments for individuals and businesses affected by the recent wildfires.

The suspension will apply for six months from the date of the announcement and will cover all types of loan obligations. A six-month suspension will also apply to compulsory debt collection procedures.

The measure will concern borrowers located within wildfire-affected areas that will be officially designated by the Greek government.

Eligible individuals and businesses are required to contact their respective banks and submit a request to benefit from the support measures.
