A life-sentenced inmate was shot dead by another prisoner during a violent incident inside a guard’s office at Domokos Prison, authorities said.
According to initial information, the fatal episode unfolded inside the chief guard’s office. Two inmates were already in the room when the victim reportedly forced his way in while carrying a firearm and allegedly intended to attack the guard.
Witness accounts indicate one of the two inmates reacted immediately, leading to a struggle. During the confrontation, he reportedly managed to disarm the life-sentenced prisoner and then fired the weapon, fatally wounding him.
Tensions rose inside the prison following the shooting. Correctional officers and police forces quickly intervened to restore order and document the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities are now examining how the inmate obtained the gun and the precise conditions that led to the deadly escalation in a high-security area. Investigators are also collecting statements from correctional staff and inmates who were near the scene.
The deceased inmate was reportedly a key defendant in the 2021 killing of a hotel owner on the island of Zakynthos.
The investigation is ongoing.
