The Municipality of Nisyros has announced the payment of a housing and meals allowance amounting to 200 euros per month for 13 teachers across all levels of education, according to Mayor Christofis Koroneos, speaking to the newspaper Ta Nea.

The financial support covers the period from November through April, offering targeted relief during the most demanding months of the school year for educators serving on the remote island.

However, the most significant development lies in the measure’s future. As Koroneos previewed, the initiative is set to become permanent: starting next school year, the allowance will be disbursed from September onward, ensuring that teachers receive support from their very first day on the island.

The move goes beyond standard administrative policy, reflecting what the mayor described as a moral commitment to sustaining education in Greece’s remote island communities.

“Those who choose to serve education in the remote island of Nisyros will not be alone or unsupported. We actively stand by those who keep our schools alive every day,” he said.

He further emphasized the long-term nature of the policy, adding: “This is not a loan, nor an opportunistic benefit. It is an institutional commitment that will continue.”
