Flights at Athens International Airport faced significant delays after a malfunction in an approach radar system disrupted air traffic operations.

The issue affected one of the Civil Aviation Authority’s approach radars in the Merenda area, causing problems with the radar image used for monitoring aircraft movements. The malfunction resulted in disruptions to the airport’s flight schedule, with some flights delayed by up to two hours.

Technical teams were immediately mobilized to restore the system, while safety measures were put in place to ensure the continued secure management of air traffic.

Temporary limits on arrivals

Due to the radar problem, authorities temporarily reduced the rate of arriving flights at Athens International Airport. The measure was introduced as a precaution to maintain safe operations while the technical issue was being addressed.
