Weather conditions in Greece are expected to become more stable from Friday, with fewer signs of instability and a more typical summer pattern over the weekend. Sunshine will dominate most areas, while the seasonal meltemi winds will strengthen in the Aegean Sea and temperatures will rise slightly.
Despite the increase in heat, temperatures are not expected to reach heatwave levels.
Friday: Fewer showers, stronger northern winds
On Friday, June 26, unstable weather will be significantly reduced compared with previous days.
The day began mostly clear and sunny, but temporary cloud development is expected from midday onwards, mainly over mainland areas and especially in western and northern parts of the country.
Local showers or brief rain showers may occur, while isolated thunderstorms are possible in mountainous areas of the northwest.
Northern winds will continue, with stronger conditions in the Aegean Sea, where they will reach 4 to 6 Beaufort and locally up to 7 Beaufort.
Temperatures will rise slightly, reaching:
- 32°C to 35°C in mainland areas
- 29°C to 33°C in the islands
Weather in Athens and Thessaloniki
In Athens, skies will remain mostly clear throughout the day with plenty of sunshine. Temperatures will range from 22°C to 34°C, locally reaching 35°C, while northern winds will blow at 3 to 5 Beaufort and locally up to 6 or 7 Beaufort in eastern areas.
In Thessaloniki, sunny conditions are also expected, with some temporary afternoon cloud development. Local showers may occur in nearby mountainous areas. Temperatures will range from 21°C to 32°C, locally reaching 33°C.
Saturday: Summer weather and strong meltemi winds
Saturday will bring mostly sunny and summer-like weather across Greece.
Only northern mainland areas may see temporary clouds during the afternoon, with short-lived showers possible in parts of Macedonia and mountainous areas of Epirus and Thrace.
The meltemi winds will strengthen significantly in the Aegean, reaching 4 to 6 Beaufort and locally 7 to 8 Beaufort. In the Ionian Sea, winds will generally remain weaker, reaching up to 5 Beaufort locally.
Temperatures will continue to rise, reaching:
- 34°C to 36°C in mainland areas
- Around 30°C to 32°C in island regions
- Locally 33°C to 35°C in Crete and the Dodecanese islands
However, forecasts indicate that no heatwave conditions are expected.
Sunday: Sunny skies across Greece
On Sunday, clear weather will continue across almost the entire country.
Only limited temporary clouds are expected during the afternoon in some northern mainland areas and parts of Crete.
Winds will remain from northern and northeastern directions, reaching 4 to 6 Beaufort in the Aegean, with local gusts up to 7 to 8 Beaufort.
