Olympiacos FC on Wednesday evening hosted the inauguration of an innovative partnership between the Municipality of Piraeus and its public library with the US embassy in Greece, within the framework of the American Space Piraeus Pop-Up program at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, the popular football club’s home field.

A friendly match took place on the pitch afterwards between Olympiacos veterans and a team of celebrities from Greece and the United States.

Olympiacos FC President Evangelos Marinakis, US ambassador to Greece George Tsunis and Piraeus Mayor Yannis Moralis inaugurated the work on the new American Corner at the Karaiskakis Stadium.

“We’ll be there; we’ll support it and very soon we’ll see that the results of this effort will be particularly encouraging, allowing us to do even more in the future,” the Olympiacos leader said.

The specially designated space, an initiative of the US embassy in Greece, is adjacent to the stadium and includes easy access to the Internet for educational and cultural events.

“We bring Olympiacos, the city of Piraeus, the library of Piraeus and the US embassy in concert to work together to provide opportunities for young people, and whether those opportunities are in a library, or in a classroom for educational purposes, or, an equal learning opportunity on the football pitch to learn healthy competition, to learn to work as a unit,” Amb. Tsunis said.

The initiative is part of a general framework of cooperation between Olympiacos and the city of Piraeus and the US embassy, with the primary goal being a cultural contribution to society.

“You’ll see that both points will operation to the benefit of the children of Piraeus,” Mayor Moralis said on his part.

Evangelos Marinakis gifted Amb. Tsunis an Olympiacos jersey during the presentation, with the latter donning the jersey during the remainder of the event.

The friendly match took place afterwards, pitting the Olympiacos veterans against the celebrity team.
